CZ 75 B

The CZ 75 is one of the best 9mm pistol designs. The one below is a Cold War Commemorative version.

CZ75

CZ75B

The CZ75B is the version of the CZ75 manufactured since the 1990s.  The B indicates that it has a firing pin block as an additional safety.  The version seen above, is a special limited production Cold War Commemorative edition of the CZ75B.  It has several distinctive features setting it apart from a normal CZ75:

  • Rounded trigger guard, as on the original CZ75s.
  • Engraved and painted Red Hammer & Sickle on each side of the frame.
  • Engraved and painted Red Star on each side of the slide.
  • Standard factory descriptions stamped on the frame and slide in Cyrillic lettering.
  • Serial numbers beginning with CCCP

Though it was designed in Czechslovakia in 1975, the CZ75 was not sold, even in its home country, until 1985.  Since it was a 9mm design, it was also, not adopted by the Czechslovakian armed forces until 1989, when the Soviet Union and Warsaw Pact collapsed.  It became available in the West around the same time.  The pistol is still produced by CZ (Ceska Zbrojovka) n the Czech Republic town of Uhersky Brod.  Over 1,000,000 million have been sold.

At the time it appeared, it was considered to be a revolutionary design, with the slide riding inside of the frame rails, a high capacity magazine, and a Colt 1911/Browning High Power style, frame mounted safety.  The action and safety allowed the gun to be carried either cocked and locked like a 1911 and with the advantage of a single action trigger pull for all shots or, after carefully lowering the hammer, hammer down with a double action pull for the first shot.  The slide inside the frame rails resulted in longer frame to slide bearing surfaces and a relatively low bore axis, increasing the accuracy, which is considered to be comparable to SIGs and Berettas.

This excellent design has also been widely copied as the Tanfoglio TZ-75, IMI Jericho 941, EAA Witness, Springfield P9, Sphinx 2000, and several others.  The gun and its clones serve police and armed forces of some 22 countries.
