Colt followed the success of the Walker with the Dragoon which was a scaled down Walker firing the same size ball but with less power.  Though several thousand were made in multiple variants it was not a huge commercial success.

However, when Colt scaled down the Dragoon to a pocket model around ½ the length and ⅓ the weight holding 5, .31” balls instead of 6, .44” balls; was more successful.  The gun was reliable, easy to shoot, and concealable.  It also, it the market right as the American West was being opened up and the Gold Rush was occurring in California.  These events drove demand and Colt eventually produced over 325,000 Pocket Dragoons, making it the most popular Colt percussion revolver.

It was made in a variety of versions, with standard barrel lengths of 3.0”, 3.5”, and 4.0”.  The Pocket Dragoon was one of the primary concealed carry weapons of the 2nd half of the 19th century.  One version was especially concealable, the “Wells Fargo” model which had the 3.0” barrel and no loading lever.   This gun gave Colt the commercial success that enabled it to produce other percussion revolvers, the 1873 Single Action Army, and M1911.
